Hiking Gear Check List:

Backpacks For Hiking

Backpacks are an essential part of the hiking gear. Hikers need a durable lightweight hiking backpack that is both rip and water resistant. They are generally made of nylon fabric which can bring the weight of the backpack down to under half a pound.

What size backpack are you looking for? The size for each individual is determined by how much hiking equipment you will want to carry. Get a bag that's too small and you won't fit all your gear in. But if you go too big you will be inclined to pack extra and unnecessary gear thereby putting extra weight in your backpack.

When loading your backpack you will be more comfortable if you pack your heavier gear higher and closer to your back, thereby improving your center of gravity. Lighter items, such as your sleeping bag and mat or pad, should be placed lower in your backpack.

The vast majority of new packs sold today are internal framed backpacks.

Internal frame backpacks  have a streamlined shape because the frame is built into them. Because the pack is flexible and carries close to the body, it offers a comfortable fit, a low center of gravity and a greater freedom of movement due to them not being as bulky as the external backpacks.

External framed backpacks have an outside frame to which the backpack and equipment are attached. It is a good choice for the backpacker that carries a heavy load due to the fact that the external frame distributes the weight over the hips. The frame also carries the pack away from your back allowing air to circulate and improving ventilation.

External frame backpacks also allow you to attach other gear or equipment to the frame that you won't fit in your backpack.

Casual Daypacks and Bags are ideal for day hikes as well as for children. Most day packs are large enough to carry all of your day hiking essentials. They can carry loads ranging from 5 to 15 pounds quite easily.

Children love to carry day packs and it will also ease your load by sharing around those extra few pounds.

Lightweight Hiking Tents

If you are backpacking, as opposed to camping, you typically need a good quality water proof lightweight hiking tent that weighs less than 5 pounds.

The size of the hiking tent that you will need will be either a one person or two person depending of how much room you would like inside the hiking tent. Check the dimensions of your proposed hiking tent to make sure it can accommodate you and your hiking gear comfortably.

A footprint, otherwise known as a tarp, to put under your hiking tent would be another good option.

Lightweight Sleeping Pads

A good lightweight sleeping pad will keep you warm and comfortable during the night, ensuring that you have a good nights sleep and are fresh and ready to go the next morning.

Without a good sleeping pad, no matter how good your sleeping bag is, you are more than likely to sleep cold no matter what the weather is like. They provide that comfort and insulation between you and the cold ground. Your sleeping bag alone isn't enough to keep you warm during the night because the cold ground will draw the heat from you and leave you with a cold and uncomfortable night.

As opposed to car camping, the hiker or backpacker would be looking for a LIGHTWEIGHT sleeping pad so they can keep the weight to a minimum.

Lightweight Sleeping Bags

Buy the best lightweight sleeping bag you can afford. The majority of sleeping bags that are designed for hikers are lightweight and compact so they can keep the weight to a minimum.

Invest in sleeping bags that are rated for the worst conditions that you are likely to endure. For example, if the worst temperature that you are going to sleep in will be 0 degrees, choose sleeping bags that are rated to minus 10 degrees. Go the extra 10 degrees. Remember it is easier to cool down than warm up.

A travel pillow would also be a good addition to your hiking gear.

Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are one of the most important parts of your hiking gear that you need on a hike. Hiking boots come in a wide variety of shapes, makes and materials so it is important to select a pair of hiking boots to suit yourself.

Lightweight hiking boots that extends just over the ankle would be suitable for a high percentage of hikers. Someone with weak ankles may need hiking boots with a lot of ankle support. Or you may be more comfortable with your normal running shoes instead of hiking boots. It all depends on the individual.

Another good option would be the inclusion of a pair of camp shoes or sandles so that you don't have to wear your hiking boots around the camp. Also don't forget your socks.

Hiking Apparel & Clothing

Layered clothing is essential as it is more convenient to add or remove your clothing during your hike as your body temperature changes. For example, in the morning the air temperature will be low and you will need to have most of your layers on until you become more active. As your activity level and body temperature increases you will be able to shed some layers to keep yourself more comfortable. Towards the end of the day as the temperature drops you can easily add layers.

Base layers are the first bit of clothing you put on in the morning and are basically a second skin that keeps you warm, dry and comfortable. The main purpose of the base layer is to manage moisture by wicking sweat and perspiration away from your body while still giving you that degree of insulation. How much insulation you need depends on the weather as well as your anticipated level of activity.

# Polypropylene # Men's long-sleeve crew shirt; ideal as base layer;

# Designed for all sports and seasons

The insulation layer needs to breath to let the sweat escape. The goal here is to provide warmth by creating dead air space which allows the loss of body heat as well as continuing to help in the dissipation of moisture from your base layers.

The first insulating layer is typically shirts, shorts and pants. A long sleeve shirt with plenty of pockets is a good choice for most conditions. A thin shirt is cool, dries very quickly and you can easily roll the sleeves up whenever you want to. They also provide good sunscreen and bug protection.

Shorts or Pants? Some hikers prefer to wear pants to provide protection against the wind, shrubs and the elements, while shorts can be more comfortable on a warm sunny day. It all depends on the individual. There are convertible pants available to suit all conditions such as the Columbia Men's Silver Ridge Convertible Pants.

Synthetic fleece is also a great choice as an insulation layer. It is lightweight, dries quickly and keeps you warm.
